INSPIRATION: Neil Armstrong

It was a defining moment of the 20th century, perhaps the defining moment.

On 20 July 1969 astronaut Neil A. Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon, forever changing humanity's view of the universe its place in it. With more than half a billion people watching on television, Armstrong the commander of Apollo 11 climbed down the ladder and said: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

Celebrated as heroes and a global inspiration, the crew's lives were forever changed. Initially, Armstrong embraced the life of a public figure at events such as their ticker tape parade down Broadway and Park Avenue in New York (with fellow crew members Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin), but he was never fully comfortable with his celebrity status and later in life would refuse autographs and interviews.

The Apollo 11 flight was his last space mission, but he remained with NASA until 1971 before pursuing a career in teaching and business.
Armstrong died aged 82 in August 2012. He remains a towering inspiration - the first human to walk on the moon.
